Oxidation is a chemical reaction that is happening constantly in our bodies. When our body cells use oxygen, they produce a by product known as 'free radicals. These free radicals can cause cell damage. In layman's terms it is like the 'free radicals' bombard our cells, damaging them a little at a time resulting in both a damaged cell and lots of debris which then goes on the bombard more cells in a chain reaction. This process contributes towards the ageing and decay of our bodies. Anti-oxidants, on the other hand, do exactly what the name suggests - that is to combat the effect of the free radicals released by oxidation. In fact they are referred to as 'free radical scavengers' implying that they go and search out the free radicals so preventing the potential damage. Anti oxidants are founds naturally in many foods and by including these in your diet you are giving a leg up to your system and to your health. Oxidation is, as mentioned, contributive to ageing and general health decline, but in addition to that there are some problems particularly associated with oxidation for example heart disease, diabetes, cancer, macular degeneration and other infections.
