More about Organico Nerone Rice, Wholegrain (Black Rice)

Also known as 'Forbidden Rice', black rice, according to legend was reserved exclusively for the Chinese Emperor and the Imperial family - where it was much appreciated for its' nutritional and aphrodisiac properties!

The 'Nerone' black rice is grown in only certain parts of the Po valley and is prized for it's fragrant aroma and texture.

The Organico speciality rice range is grown and packed in Bianze in the heart of the century-old rice fields of the Northern Po valley. Their partners, the Picco family have been cultivating rice there since 1878. they are dedicated to the environmental stewardship of the land and to preserving the culture and cultivation of rice.
Together with other local families they have formed a co-operative to both pack and develop find quality Italian rice. they grow a wide range of typical and newer varieties on their land. The rice is husked through a stone milling process that is more careful or gentle and therefore helps preserve the nutritional and taste qualities of the grain.

Delicious and very nutritious - Tue 24th Nov 2015

I love this rice; it is very nutritious and makes a lovely change to white or brown rice (the latter of which I am not a fan of anyway). However, I have to admit they take a LOT longer to cook than regular white rice! Bear this in mind when allowing yourself time to cook the rest of your meal. I cooked this rice and added it to cooked quinoa for a mix of grains/seeds in one dish. I added roasted red peppers, garlic, ginger, grated carrot, spinach, cucumber, olive oil and lemon juice for a lovely salad.

Loved it - Sun 2nd Aug 2015

Used to get organic black rice shipping from China regularly as I love it for breakfast and make dessert with it. So glad to find this organic black rice grow in Italy. Bought this over and over again, love the favor. No more trouble searching for good organic black rice.

Tasty - Tue 2nd Sep 2014

Really good quality product. This rice is delicious! Really nice cold in salads.

Wonderful product! - Sat 24th May 2014

Even better than expected. Takes a while to cook and requires more water than other rice, but worth it! The cooked grains are deep purply red and like a short grain. Yields an almost fudgy texture, similar to risotto. Adds fantastic colour and drama to meals, tastes good cold too. Will buy again and again.

This is a true rice so not to be confused with the black seeds known as 'wild rice'. Needs a good wash before cooking, when it will absorb slightly less than twice its volume of water, and is cooked after simmering for 40 minutes. However, it then needs straining and rinsing through with boiling water to remove the excess colour that runs out of the grains and any stray scum. There was scum all around the pan after cooking and a considerable amount of colour run, which may stain some cooking pots and utensils. I had intended to use it to add some interest to salads and pilaff type dishes but now think a salad dressing would probably cause more colour to run.
