Tofu is bean curd, made from soya. It's high in protein, low in calories and fat and although it's low in fibre, it is a great source of calcium. Plain tofu tastes very bland but it absorbs flavours really well and will take on the taste of whatever you cook it with, even sweet and tangy things.

Crusted Tofu - Wed 5th Feb 2014

1 pack of Tofu, drained and dried.

1 tablespoon of paprika.

1 teaspoon of ground cumin.

1 teaspoon of ground coriander.

1 teaspoon of sea salt.

Freshly ground black pepper.

1 tablespoon of olive oil.

3 tablespoons of boiling water.

2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

4 teaspoons of honey.

25 grams of pine nuts, toasted.

On a plate mix together the paprika, cumin, coriander, salt and a grind of black pepper.

Cut the tofu block in half, then slice each half horizontally, ending up with four large steaks of tofu.

Dip these in the spice mix, making sure each is well coated on all sides.

Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the tofu and fry until brown and crusty on both sides.

Mix together the water, honey and lemon juice, add to the pan, it will bubble up and disappear quickly, leaving a sticky glaze.

Sprinkle the pine nuts over the steaks and serve.

Scrambled Tofu - Fri 31st Jan 2014

This is a great scrambled egg replacement.
Drain and dry the tofu.
In a frying pan with a little olive oil, break it up with a fork until it resembles scrambled egg.
Fry it gently, moving it about until it is coated in the oil and cooked.
At this point add a dash of tamari, a quarter teaspoon of turmeric and a half teaspoon of mustard powder.
Season with salt and pepper.
Great on toast or as part of a vegan fried breakfast.

I find this better in meals such as stir fries than on its own as a snack. It holds its shape less well than Taifun, but is enjoyable in the right dish non the less. Worth a try.

A good value tofu that can be mashed with a fork and scrambled like an egg into a delicious meal. If like me you prefer a cleaner flavour and firmer texture I would recommend Taifun instead.

They make some of my favourite tofu - it's closer to homemade tofu than most brands so lighter and fluffier but doesn't hold together very well.

This is a good quality tofu- I was surprised by how well it held up to being sliced (and used in sandwiches) and cubed (added to curries/stews.) Unlike Cauldron tofu the texture is smooth and the taste is mild but pleasant such that I can eat it without heavily marinating it beforehand (and it doesn't crumble like Cauldron's does) Great value for money too

I think I've been converted to Clear Spot as my favourite brand of Tofu, along with Taifun of course. The texture is excellent, it has a good flavour and is easy to cook with. I've found some other brands are very wet and need lots of draining before I can fry them. This brand is always firm and needs very little work before I can use it. A great product.

Quite simply one of the best tofus I've bought. I usually make my own but don't always have the time so I bought this as a treat and it was a great surprise. My mother and I usually make and have firm tofu - and aren't fans of silken tofu though of course its great for desserts, alternative drinks and items like cheeses - but for the first time we actually loved a soft tofu! I say soft because we cooked it too quickly and not separately so it didn't harden up or get a crispy coat at all but it was still very tasty and the texture was soft but not wet and silky. I also checked the company website before buying this and really liked reading how much care is taken into making their products.
