Nutritional Information

Per 100g:
Energy 743kJ/174kcal, Protein 5g, Carbohydrate 40g, Fat 0.5g.


Carob Cake

100g margarine
100g brown sugar
4 free range eggs (separated)
½tsp almond essence
50g carob powder
40g self raising flour
40g ground almonds
80g icing sugar
25g carob powder
40g butter
4tsp boiling water

Grease and line 2x7" sandwich tins
Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolks and essences. Combine carob powder, flour and ground almonds. Stiffly whisk the egg whites. Fold the dry ingredients and egg whites alternately into the mixture. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tins. Bake at 350°F / 180°C / gas mark 4 for about 20 minutes until just firm to touch. Cool on a wire tray.
For the filling, mist carb, icing sugar, butter and water until combined. Spread between the two cakes.

Carob and Oat Smoothie - Wed 14th Aug 2013

Another reviewer suggested treating carob as not merely a chocolate substitute but as an alternative. I do this myself. I have cocoa and carob in my kitchen! Both are good.

Breakfast Carob, Oat and Banana Smoothie

Blend together:
1 chopped banana
1 rounded tbsp carob powder
1 tbsp ground flax seeds
1/4 U.S. cup rolled oats (about 2 tbsp)
Just under 3/4 pint unsweetened non-dairy milk
3 - 4 chopped dried dates

I've tried a few varieties of carob powder before but this one is almost black with a deep vanilla/liquorice flavour that has a hint of sweetness and is just indescribable. The kids and I love this as hot chocolate before bed made with coconut milk and honey with a sprinkle of cinnamon - much better than cocoa as it is caffeine free, and it also thickens drinks a little. It's also really good as a replacement for cocoa in cakes too; gives a truly rich dark chocolate cake and is best sweetened with maple or molasses ;-)

A good value product, very useful as a cacao substitute, or simply to enjoy the special taste of carob which is dense and slightly bitter.

Carob drinks - NO! - Mon 24th Nov 2014

After years of using carob powder as an alternative for cocoa drinks (and would eat it by the spoonful it was so delicious), this is so bitter and powdery that I am no longer using it. Sometimes I boil it with water and milk than add more milk, but it is nothing like the (?raw) carob which I so much liked. What a disappointment. Wish I could find find the raw carob.

Great chocolate/cocoa/cacao replacement but for those who can have chocolate it's actually really nice added to it as well making it richer and deeper.

Very good value carob powder compared to some other brands. Lovely for breakfast smoothies, or for a warming evening alternative to hot cocoa. Also really nice when made into a dairy-free hot custard - or a chilled 'blancmange' like pudding - using soya milk, carob powder to flavour, cornflour to thicken and maple syrup to sweeten.

Just discovered this! Very cheap and perfect for putting in cakes and biscuits in place of cocoa powder. Doesn't taste exactly like cocoa, but its caffeine free and low in fat. I also like to add to hot milk with honey as a drink.

I used this to make a vegan version of Nutella and it turned out very nice. The flavour is similar to chocolate, but kind of fruity and almost treacley, too. I think it is delicious. This is so dark, you could use it to darken up pumpernickle rye bread very nicely (a little goes a long way in that regard). The price is great, too.

Alternative rather than substitute - Mon 12th Aug 2013

People who can't have coco usually go for carob but it's a nice thing for anyone to try as it brings its own slightly different flavour that's similarly moreish. Maybe could be described as being a cross between vanilla, coco and is subtly sweet. I originally made the mistake of eating too much and went slightly off for a while, but after a break I'm enjoying it again using smaller amounts this time.

Just mix ground linseed, ground sunflower seeds, ground sesame seeds, some carob powder, dessicated coconut and some honey or maple syrup. Knead into balls and enjoy!

I have to admit, I don't buy this often as one box has latest me absolutely years, but I can vouch for the fact that it will last for ages without spoiling in a sealed container!
I mostly like to use my carob for Rose Elliot recipes, like her everythingless Christmas cake, and best of all (favoured by all in our house, including our cat who stole some once!) carob and cashew nut squares. I even bravely tried some in home made truffles once!

I made a great "chocolate" sponge with this and it worked perfectly. I haven't tried it with milk yet to see if it makes a nice cocoa drink but I am sure it would work if I added a bit of vanilla powder.

When you can't have theobromine in chocolate try carob powder instead. It really is a great alternative to chocolate or cocoa. Carob is a little sweeter though so reduce your sugar a little in recipes.
