Biona organic pale green lentils are a great low GL food. Delicious in soups, stews and casseroles, these lentils are tinned with no added sugar or salt so just rinse them and they are ready to eat.

Serving Suggestion

Organic lentils can be used in casseroles, soups and salads. Try them as a salad with oven roasted vegetables and garlic. Dress with balsamic vinegar, olive oil and seasoning.

Quick Lentil Soup - Thu 3rd Jan 2013

Ingredients: 1 med onion, chopped. 1 med potato (Maris Piper or other good masher), chopped. Butter or olive oil for frying. 1 tin green lentils, drained and rinsed. Water. Salt & pepper for seasoning. Saucepan or high sided frying pan.

Gently fry the onion and potato for several minutes, until the potato shows signs of breaking down. Add the lentils and stir. Gradually add up to one tin of water, stirring all the time, until it looks like a thick soup. Bring to a rolling boil. Add seasoning to taste.

Tips: Leftover boiled potato could be used. Quantity of water needed will vary according to the potato and lentils used. Butter for frying will gives the best flavour.

A really handy storecupboard standby, when you don't have time to cook dried lentils. They have a good flavour and plenty of al dente texture. I'd buy them again - in fact, I'm just about to that.

The most common lentil I use in my kitchen and they have a delicious lamb like flavour when part of a yeasty sauce. I usually swap meat for it in recipes and some people don't realise the meal is vegan when served as a surprise.

As a meat alternative they're pretty good. Accompanied with the right herbs and spices gives them a satisfyingly meaty flavour next to its natural chewy texture, and is much more healthy. Is high in protein too.

I have many uses for these lentils, but a favourite, when we're having a 'meat-eating' day, is to add them to my organic beef bolognaise recipe during the last 10 minutes of cooking. Just drain and rinse under the tap beforehand. It adds extra goodness and makes the bolognaise go a lot further without detracting from the flavour

These are a delicious alternative to dried lentils when you don't have the time to soak overnight, or if you really fancy lentils last minute.

Heat some oil in a pan and soften an onion, 2 cloves finely chopped garlic and some grated fresh ginger. Stir in 2 tbsp mild curry powder, 1/2 tsp each of ground cumin and ground coriander and fry a little longer. Add 400 ml vegetable stock and 400 g chopped tomatoes and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and add 200 g diced potatoes. Cover and simmer for around 10 mins then add a small cauliflower cut into florets and simmer for another 10 mins. Add a 400 g can drained lentils and 150 g fresh young spinach and heat through thorougly until the spinach is wilted. Stir in around 100 ml cream and 1-2 tsp sugar. Season then serve with rice and natural yogurt.
