Cooking Instructions

Measure 1 cup of rice and rinse thoroughly with water. Combine washed rice with 2 1/4's cups of liquid (water or broth), Put rice and liquid into a saucepan, cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Reduce to a medium setting and cook for 50-60 mins. All the water should be absorbed. Fluff rice with a fork.

Very yummy and wholesome rice. Lovely flavour. Would eat this over other varieties.

Fruity Rice Salad - Thu 8th Dec 2011

Cook 300 g rice mix, drain, rinse in cold water to cool down, then drain again thoroughly. Put the rice into a serving bowl. Remove peel from 3 sweet mandarins, taking off as much pith as possible. Cut into chunky slices. Squeeze the juice from another mandarin into a bowl and mix with 3 tbsp olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Add the clementine dressing to the rice along with 100 g dried cranberries, 3 finely sliced spring onions, 50 g toasted chopped walnuts and some chopped flat leaf parsley. Toss to combine and then fold through the mandarin slices. Season and serve.

I love this rice dish as it adds some crunchy texture to the rice, making it an ideal side dish to dahl or a crunchy veggie dish. Great with cauliflower cheese or with chicken breasts.
Servings: Makes 6 to 8 side-dish servings.
Prep: 10 mins
Total: 1 hr 15 mins

4 stalks celery, chopped (2 cups)
1 small onion, chopped (1/4 cup)
1 tablespoon margarine or butter
90g wild rice mix, rinsed and drained
400ml vegetable bouillon
400ml water
45g pitted whole dates (such as medjool), snipped
45g chopped walnuts, toasted

1. In a 10-inch pan cook celery and onion in hot margarine or butter about 10 minutes or until tender. Add uncooked wild rice; cook and stir for 3 minutes. Add broth and water. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 50 to 60 minutes or until most of the liquid is absorbed and rice is tender.
2. Stir in dates and walnuts. Cook, uncovered, for 3 to 4 minutes more or until heated through and remaining liquid is absorbed. Makes 6 to 8 side-dish servings.


not sticky enough - Wed 18th Mar 2015

Personally, I like rice a little bit sticky to feel yummy. This wild rice is not, so better to go with stews. I suppose it's healthier than other because it's 'wild'. But as a heavy rice eater, the pack is too small.

An interesting mix - Mon 10th Feb 2014

I always cook Brown and non-White rice with a lot of water and slowly because they take a long time to cook and can still tend to be chewy and hard. This one is tough because the regular rice cooks faster than the Red and and the wild - both of which need a high initial cook then slow cook. I find this rice is best steamed. The Red rice is particularly nutty too.

Nice clean rice, which cooked in the specified time. Personally, there was not enough wild rice in the mixture for my taste so I was rather disappointed.

Delicious rice mix, a really interesting, nutty flavour. I tend to use this in very simple dishes (just rice and steamed veg, maybe with a bit of fish), with just a bit of butter or olive oil over the rice to really appreciate how great the flavour is. It's quite expensive, and I find that you lose the "point" of it if you put it with rich, intense sauces.

This is a bit on the expensive side, but it's definitely worth it as a treat now and then. It gives a really distinctive, nutty, crunchy flavour to rice dishes, and aesthetically it looks amazing on the plate.

Was very excited to try this rice... but I found after about 50 mins as per the instructions, it was overdone and very gloopy... Will certainly persevere and cook it for shorter next time

I'm afraid that I was quite disappointed with this wild rice mix. I followed the instructions (60 minutes to cook rice!) but found that the rice had absorbed all of the water after 30 minutes but wasn't cooked properly. Unfortunately adding more water turned it into a risotto, instead of lovely individual grains. Biona products are usually great, so perhaps they are just dodgy instructions.

This is one of my favorite wild rices mixes ever! Sometimes if I am unwell, it is one of the only things I will eat. I love just eating it on its own with some steamed broccoli and garlic too. Nom nom nom.

I have to say I always order this rice as it is the nicest we have eaten. My sister's daughters are not keen on rice, but they love it too. It cooks really well in the microwave or on the hob and works well in any recipe and is tasty enough to eat on its own. Well worth the price.


Stuffed Peppers - Thu 4th Oct 2012

Steam cored peppers for 5 mins, stuff with leftover rice salad or pilaf and bake at 180 degrees C/gas 4 until hot.
