Oatbran (or oat bran) is the outer part of the oatgrain. It contains a soluble fibre (beta-glucan) and when included as part of a healthy diet can help reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol. So if you aim to eat 3g of beta glucan or soluble fibre from oats a day (around 60g of oat bran a day) you will help lower your cholesterol levels if eaten as part of an overall healthy diet. Oat bran can be easily consumed as a porridge or muffins. Both can be delicious. No one would guess you were eating for health.

Oat bran porridge recipe This recipe is for making our oatbran version of ready brek, a creamy, gloopy porridge. You can make this version with any kind of nut, seed or bean milk as well as dairy milk, or even leave the milk and milk powder out all together.

  • 35g oatbran
  • 190ml water
  • 2 tsp dried milk powder
  • some seeds or nuts
  • salt and sweetener to taste
    Bring to boil in a pan and simmer for 3 minutes, then enjoy.
    Microwave version of quick Oat bran porridge 4 dsp Oatbran
    Just cover the oat bran with cold water or milk to taste
    Stir well
    Microwave for 60 seconds, and stir,
    Microwave for another 60 seconds and stir. Repeat this until ready. Adding more liquid and sweetener of choice until it tastes just great.

Pastryless flan - Tue 6th Jul 2010

I made a pastryless flan with oatbran yesterday and it turned out gr8.

4 eggs
250 g longley farm cottage cheese
10 grammes oatbran
15 grammes oats
large pinch black pepper
40 grammes lighter mature cheese grated
60 grammes lean bacon chopped up into little tiny pieces
3 big mushrooms chopped up
1 large onion chopped up

Put everything into a bowl and mix up really well. Pour into a large quiche dish, or souffle dish or a loaf tin or even a cake tin - greased and/or lined if you want, cook at 180 degrees (fan) or 190 degrees (non-fan) for about 1 hour until set and nicely browned.

Turn out carefully on a plate, or leave to cool a bit before doing so. When cold, cut up into 8 pieces, cover and refrigerate. Absolutely scrumptious. No idea how to work out the nutritional facts but it's high protein, lowish carbs and probably medium fat. You can leave the mature cheese out if you like, Longley farm's cottage cheese is so good. Replace bacon with other veggies or fish or sausage, whatever you like. The oats really make this really gorgeous. Much better than adding flour to it.

I mostly add this to morning oatmeal or make it into a porridge on its own, depending on my mood - makes a creamy hot cereal with or without milk. Also love in yogurt with ground flaxseed for a quicker, cold option. Filling and great value as a little goes a long way - on its own I use roughly a 1:4 ratio of oatbran to liquid, as opposed to a 1:2 with regular rolled oats.

I've always loved porridge and find each brand is slightly different, I find this to be medium in weight, fullness not light, thin, flakey, puffy but good solid medium which makes for good consistent cooking without having to experiment with variants on cooking times and ratio for milk. A good porridge every time.

Great product at a great price. I've been using this for years, and it's definitely one of the nicer brands, not 'husky' but smoother and thickens really nicely as part of a porridge. It's great to know how much of my daily fibre I am getting with a bowl of this for breakfast, it keeps me going until lunchtime (excellent for those with busy schedules!) and it is a pleasure to eat- a lovely oatey taste. Definitely not like forcing down the wheatbran crackers! I find the soluble fibre in this helps me a lot more than the other cereals which are primarily insoluble fibre- soluble fibre is recommended for those with IBS over insoluble fibre. Can also add it to muffins, cookies, steamed pudding recipes.

Oat bran is basically the skin of the oat and contains less carbs than the inner parts which are more starchy, and is good for lowering cholesterol because of its high fiber content. I prefer this to whole oats as I'm trying to cut down on my carb intake and think it tastes much better.

Love this stuff, and add it to everything from porridge to homemade vegetarian burgers. Gives a slightly sweet, nutty flavour, and useful for binding or thickening.

I have tried a few makes of Oatbran but the Morning Foods make is far superior to any other. It is fantastic for porridge but also makes a great coating instead of flour and is excellent for thickening soups and stews. Fantastic product and brilliant value from Goodness Direct.

One of the best brands of oatbran available and reasonably priced. Not overly grainy or coarse like some oatbrans tend to be. I cook this simply with water or add one or two tablespoons of oatbran mixed with a soya yogurt or a little fruit smoothie for a quick dessert.


Oatbran Porridge - Wed 30th Mar 2011

I've just been told that my cholesterol is a bit high so I'm hitting on this oatbran porridge for breakfast as a new regime. This morning was 3 dessert spoons of oatbran with 1 dsp of normal oats. Add cold water to cover and microwave for 30 seconds, and stir, then another 30 seconds and stir etc until it is at the consistency I like my porridge to be. Add a little Xylitol sweetener to taste and a splash of almond milk if I feel like I need it to be a little more sloppy. The mix of oatbran and oats gives porridge a great texture and of course you can use any sweeteners or toppings you fancy. Delicious.
