Pinhead oats have a coarser texture than rolled oats and add texture to porridge, soups and crumbles. Pinhead oatmeal is also known as steel-cut oats, coarse-cut oats, or Irish oats. Many people confuse Scottish Oats or Scottish Oatmeal with steel cut. However Scottish Oats are steel-cut oats that have been first steamed and are then ground into an oatmeal.

These are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are more yellowy and golden than oat flakes and are not dissimilar to broken rice.

Cooking Instructions

Cooking takes a little longer than finer oatmeal.


Just Oats and nothing else.


Oats contain gluten.

Packed on a line which also handles peanuts, nuts, sesame, soya, milk, sulphur dioxide and cereals containing gluten.

Vegan Haggis - Thu 30th Jan 2014

This is such an easy dish to make and tastes delicious.
3 oz chopped mushrooms.

3 oz brown lentils, soaked overnight.

2 oz pinhead oatmeal, soaked for at least 2 hours.

5 oz chopped onions.

5 oz grated carrots.

2oz red kidney beans, cooked.

2 - 3 cloves of garlic.

1 oz margarine.

1 teaspoon of Garam Masala.

1 tablespoon of tamari.

Olive oil for frying.

Salt to season.

1 teaspoon of black pepper.

Fry the onions, carrots, mushrooms and brown lentils until soft.

Add the garam masala, salt and tamari and salt. Remove from the heat.

Add the kidney beans, margarine, pinhead oats and black pepper, mix well.

Add more salt if necessary.

Cook in a medium oven - 180 degrees centigrade, in an oven dish, covered with foil for 30 minutes.

Serve with mashed potatoes and mashed swede, a gravy is also a nice addition to this meal.

It can also be topped with mashed potato before cooking or used as a pie filling.

Note you'll be left with porridge so have a container handy to store it in the fridge for later reheating and eating, and for this recipe maybe pre-soak the oats overnight for quicker cooking. Ok, so first fill a pan about one third with pinhead oats and the rest with filtered/mineral/clean water leaving about 1-2 inches at the top, then heat on full power to start the bubbling. When you can see the oats soften through the deep water wait a further 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and leave for 10-15 minutes to post-cook. Now pour the porridge into a sieve letting the water flow into a second big pan and that's about it (the water should be subtly thick). You could maybe add a pinch of salt to taste then store the liquid in a container, same with the porridge, in the fridge for later. Remember to shake before use to evenly spread the oat fibre.

For best results soak overnight in water or water and milk but do place in a fridge if using milk. Pinch of salt adds to the nutty flavour.

I'd recommend just ordering the large size though, as 500g doesn't last long.

Very nice nutty texture and good flavour. Takes a lot longer than rolled oats (about 20 minutes) but worth the effort.

This is a nice pinhead oatmeal, I've tried other brands which I have not liked, due to lack of flavour and aroma. This cooks well if soaked prior to use.

Pinhead oats make a very tasty porridge and they have more flavour compared to rolled oats. Tastes great with hemp, pumpkin, sunflower and flaxseeds(milled). Add raisins to sweeten. No milk, sugar or honey needed.
