More about Eat Goodness Organic Split Red Lentils

A small, orange coloured organic lentil, hulled and split.

Red lentils are less common than brown lentils and have a slightly sweeter taste than the brown. They take a little less time to cook although they tend to become somewhat mushy and are therefore more suitable to soups and stews.

The lentil plant belongs to the family legume and is a cousin to peas. The plants are grown for their seeds, which are contained in pods. The botanical name derives from their resemblance in shape to the lens of the eye. Often left to dry on the plant before they are harvested, they can be cooked in many ways as well as being ground into a flour. They are used in countless cuisines worldwide and are a staple diet in many middle eastern countries and India.

Origin and History of Lentils
The Lentil is one of the oldest cultivated legumes, and is believed to be native to South Western Asia and Northern Syria.

The lentil has been an important crop from the earliest of times and was cultivated along with wheat, barley, peas, and flax. During the Neolithic period they spread to Greece and Bulgaria and during the Bronze Age to the Near East and Mediterranean. They are mentioned in The Bible's first chapter, Genesis, in the story of Esau who gave up his birthright for a dish of lentils (Genesis 25: 30-34). The ancient Greeks also enjoyed lentils, which they not only used in soups but also to make bread.

Because lentils are rich in protein and carbohydrates and are a good source of calcium, phosphorus, iron and B vitamins they made a natural staple to supplement other sources of protein. The mass cultivation has lead to changes in the size with cultivars today producing larger seeds that their originals.

Easy Lentil Soup - Fri 15th Nov 2013

This is a nice lentil soup, not a soup including lentils.

1 cup of lentils, washed and soaked overnight.

1 large onion, finely chopped.

2 large carrots, diced.

2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped.

Olive oil for frying.

Dash of tamari, for flavour and colour.

Pinch of nori flakes.

Salt and pepper.

Marigold Yeast flakes.
Fry the onion and carrots until they start to soften, add the lentils and stir until they are coated in the oil and fry gently for a few minutes.
Add the garlic and water, bring to the boil and allow to then simmer until the lentils have disintegrated. Add the tamari and nori flakes, cook a little longer to make sure they are completely cooked, adding extra water if too thick.

Add salt to suit taste.

This can be blended, but we like it as it is, serve with pepper and yeast flakes.

You can add a stock cube to this soup, some times I do, but the flavour of the lentils is the main attraction of this soup.

Good buy - Wed 9th Aug 2017

Very pleased with my product! Thanks

Great to have this in a large bag - Sun 17th Jul 2016

As vegans, we eat a lot of pulses, and these are a firm favourite because they're so quick to cook. We usually soak them to reduce energy use, but it's optional. As with all pulses, they should be washed prior to use - you can put the rinsewater on your plants. Delicious taste, and love the big package that avoids many trips to the shop.

Organic red split lentils - Wed 30th Dec 2015

Cooks very quickly if you start with very low heat and no salt until the lentils are soften. Great protein dish when in a hurry. Also a good thickener for soups and stews. It cook like a very thick stew, add agar agar flakes during the cooking and it will set like pate or serve in slices.

Lovely Lentils - Tue 25th Feb 2014

Super quality and value

- Wed 6th Jul 2011

I brought this big bag since I always use and run out of these delicious lentils. The bag is vacuum packed and not too big so stores well, also the lentils are good quality, no debris like other brands and good colour/flavour.

- Fri 15th Nov 2013

Cooking lentils - rinse well and then pour boiling water onto them and cover. Do not add salt while soaking or cooking. Allow to soak for at least an hour, but overnight is best. They will cook quickly after soaking, only add salt to them once they are completely cooked as salt hardens them and they take forever otherwise to break down and cook.
