Mate Tea is the infusion of Yerba Mate is a typical South American drink. It is one of the most favoured drinks in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. Yerba Mate is becoming ever more popular in Europe. The infusion of Yerba Mate contains caffeine which has historically made it popular as a stimulant. Mate is less astringent and contains less tannin than black tea, but is regarded as a good substitute for it. Traditionally it has been thought to have anti-rheumatic and diuretic properties and in South America it is used as a general tonic for physical exhaustion, stress ans nervous headaches.
