Houmous, originated from the middle east, is a thick spread made from mashed chickpeas, Tahini, Lemon and Garlic but there are many variations. Houmous is high in iron and vitamin C and has large amounts of folate and vitamin B6. The chickpeas make it a good source of protein and dietary fibre.
Depending on the recipe hummus carries varying amounts of monounsaturated fat. Houmous is great in vegetarian and vegan diets and like other grains and pulses, when eaten with bread it serves as a protein. Great for dipping, as a snack with crackers or for lunch.
