You may find the sugar free shopping which you are looking for in these suggested categories but this selection has been made from the labels of the product and we do ask that you check the ingredients before consumption as recipes change from time to time.
Wanting to avoid sugar? Sugar and sweeteners can be present in foods under so many guises that it is hard to know where to draw the line. What we have done is to label items as ‘sugar free’ if they do not contain any conventional sugar, sucrose. Sucrose is the most refined sweetener in a form which, when consumed, quickly increases our blood sugar level.
Other more natural sweeteners can be absorbed more slowly and would be preferred for health and well-being. The sweetness from complex carbohydrates is a much better way to add a little sweetness to your diet, like the natural sugars in fruit, vegetables and grains all in moderation. Although these are still sugars they are preferred over sucrose. Try amazake, agave syrup, sweet freedom, apple juice, fructose, barley malt syrup, or other natural sweeteners as an alternative to sugar (sucrose).
Some other sweeteners are not natural but chemical, they go by several trade names, we would recommend you avoid these and to this end we do not stock any items with aspartame in.
Intolerance or sensitivity to refined sugar is common, and it has been suggested that over a quarter of us are a little intolerant to this addictive substance that has no nutritional value other than to add calories. To give a quick summary: sugar increases blood fat (triglyceride) levels; is packed with empty calories; encourages the growth of yeasts like those in candida albicans; it disturbs our blood sugar levels, which diabetics know all about; and it can effect a depletion of vitamins and minerals.
So just a reminder that in this context our ‘Sugar Free’ flag really means ‘No added sucrose’. You will not find it on naturally sugar free foods like herbal teas or vegetables for example.
Remember that once you have selected SUGAR FREE to narrow your search you will no longer see any other products other than those marked sugar free. This may not be a problem, but just to remind you that we only mark relevant products and so general groceries like herb tea, rice, fruit & veg etc may not be labelled even though they have no sucrose content. Remember to remove the flags to see the full listing again.
