Gluten is a mixture of two proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Casein is a protein found in the milk of all mammals. Why should you want to avoid these two sets of protein? The gluten free/casein free diet is recommended for some of those on the Autistic Spectrum as it has been shown to help some of those on the spectrum. The Autism research Institute recommend the diet as a possible help for autism and related disorders. This gluten free and casein free selection of foods has also been seen to be beneficial to those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

This dietary selection goes beyond the normal gluten free diets so if you are a coeliac and are looking for gluten free foods you can eat please check out our Gluten Free selection.

Gluten Free/Casein Free Diet

What is included in the gluten free and casein free diet?

Products included in this diet do include a slightly wider range than it’s title suggests. The criteria for the gluten free/casein free (also referred to as the GF/CG diet) are: gluten free, one of the proteins found in wheat, oats, rye and barley; casein free, a protein found in mammals milk; aspartame free, artificial sweetener; MSG free. Mono-sodium glutamate, a flavour enhancer.

Most natural wholefoods and fresh foods are perfect for the GFCF diet. Fruit and vegetables, beans and pulses and most cereals are all excellent for this diet and also great nutrition. However some children cannot tolerate certain fruits, yeast, sugar, nitrates high salicylic acid and phenols. We do not flag any fruit or vegetables as suitable for this diet so you will need to look at those separately. Neither has this criteria necessarily been taken into account when flagging the suitable foods as this varies alot from child to child. Please check the recommended foods carefully for your children. We try and give ingredients on all products. A vegan selection of foods is also recommended for this diet.

Calcium and other vitamins

It is recommended that if your children are seen to benefit from the GFCF diet and you decide to persist with this restriction that you supplement with a GFCF calcium supplement and other vitamins of ensure that these vitamins and minerals are included through dietary sources.

How did we arrive at this selection of foods?

We have made the selection in conjunction with Ruth Ward, the mother of Paul who has apersgers. Ruth has advised us about product range from her experience of Paul’s diet. We would welcome your comments and advice on product selection, additions and deletions.

NarrowRemember that once you have selected GFCF to narrow your search you will no longer see any other products other than those marked as GFCF. This may not be a problem, but just to remind you that we only mark relevant products and so general groceries, rice, fruit & veg etc may not be labelled even though they are GFCF compliant.
