Write ReviewProduct Details
Did you know that it can take 75,000 saffron blossoms to produce a single pound of saffron spice? No wonder Saffron is the world's most expensive spice by weight. Saffron, from the Iridaceae family, is a highly prized culinary and therapeutic spice derived from the Crocus flower (Crocus sativus).
Prof. Monique Simmonds, lead researcher at Kew Gardens in London, says that there are unique compounds found naturally in saffron that have medicinal values (crocin and safranal). These belong to the the carotenoid family which includes beta-carotene. Studies show that these compounds play key roles in aspects of health,(particularly for eyes and mood). Saffron also has a high content of lutein, which is why it has a part to play in maintaining eye health.
Weight control
In addition to it's benefits to our eye health and general stress management, Saffron extract may also be an invaluable aid to “between- meal” snacking. Research has shown that Saffron works in this area by boosting serotonin, reducing anxiety and stress which can be central to compulsive eating. By targeting the neurochemistry at the root of compulsive eating, saffron extract serves as a safe, natural way to reduce calorific intake and with a calorie controlled diet hopefully induce weight loss.
Recommended Dosage
1-3 capsules of Saffron (with Marigold) daily with food or as recommended by a healthcare practitioner. This 30mg extract from the saffron stigma is a 1:6 ratio water/ethanol extract providing 0.3% safranal. Other active principles naturally present include the carotenoid crocin, and picrocrocin, a bitter glucoside. 1 capsule provides 270mg dried marigold flower petals.
