I have used comfrey ointment & massage oil - mainly Potter's - for many years and have achieved consistent and beneficial results on bruises, sprains and cuts.

The active ingredients in comfrey accelerate cell growth, as anyone may read if they research the compound. This means that the warning about not using it on open wounds needs modification! The risk associated with putting the oitment on open wounds is that the healing process is so fast that small particles of detritus may be trapped underneath the wound surface & cause infection. If the wound is cleaned thoroughly, before applying the ointment, this should not be a problem, but it is a factor of which users should be aware. I have used the ointment on a deep cut caused by a chef's knife, having first washed the wound under running water for several minutes. In 24 hours, the wound was sealed and well on its way to healing. It is important not to parrot warnings that have been put in place through ignorance. One short paragraph of explanation would be very useful in allowing the ointment to be used more widely and with foreknowledge of the extent of the hazard involved.
