My Dad who introduced me to this cereal only a few weeks ago. Apparently he remembered the stuff from childhood and was suprised, upon discovering it in the health shop, to find it still available. It has a box design that clearly hasn't changed in at least 20 years and the stuff looks like pieces of bark. But he'd had quite an addiction to it and implored me to at least try a piece, despite the grim appearance. And bugger me if a wasn't delicious. Made from dates, prunes and various cereals (but all magically formed into these bark pieces, it doesn't physically have bits of prune bobbing around, (that would be weird) and looks to be pretty bloody good for you! I have now invested in a box.

Excellent, very different to other cereals and extremely more-ish. They have a delicious fruity taste and are a very handy snack, as well as good for breakfast. I've been eating them all day!

We love your Frugrains but can you please use a less powerful glue on your packets. It is impossible to open the box without destroying it!

Would you believe I searched the internet to see if fru-grains still existed. The memory of them still lingers from childhood! So delicious, no other cereal has ever come close!

Wonderful cereal but can one find it in the US? I have fond memories but cannot find it.

Nibble in the Day - Tue 7th Oct 2008
The order was most excellent, I have given seven packets of Fru Grains as gifts to friends so far. None of them had heard of the cereal before and assure me it will regularly be on their table. I had never heard of Fru Grains until a friend of mine gave me a packet, I then found you on the net and boom boom. Every one is happy. It's good for breakfast or as a nibble during the day. I think it is so good that if I was younger I would take over their marketing.

What a great find from the health shop! This is one of the most impressive breakfast cereals ever... even my partner who wasn't so sure of the look didn't complain and finished the whole bowl and we've bought some more! The box itself also looks great! Its so nice to have an ingrediants list that doesn't involve chemicals and additives that you've never heard of. I'm a fan:)

These are really nice, they look a bit like cinnamon bark, when I first showed them to my husband he turned his nose up as he dislikes healthy/odd looking things but after he tried them he also became addicted to them. I dont buy them that often because we both just keep going to the packet in the day and eat them like crisps! They are a little bit sweet, not sure what they are like with milk as we just eat them raw but expect they might go a bit soggy.

We have just sampled our first packet of the "new improved" recipe and we were disappointed. You describe it as being crisp and snappy but I found it sticky and chewy. I had to hold it in my mouth to soften it enough to chew it. I've been eating Fru grains for over 40 years and though the taste is "OK" the texture is disappointing. My kids used to call the originals "logs" and they were certainly crisp and snappy. Perhaps you can revise the cooking method or the recipe to give us back a much loved cereal. The pieces can be small as you have now made them but please please make them crisp and snappy.

I have been trying for the last few months to buy Fru-grains only to be told that they had been taken off the market. Last week I thought I would ask again to see if they were. I was delighted and bought two packets noticing they were in packets and not boxes like before. On arriving home I couldn't wait to try them. However I was so disappointed to find they were not the same - yes the same ingredients but not the big crunchy pieces like I've always enjoyed since I was a teenager over 60 years ago (I'm now 82years old) but they were just a bag of crumbs that just went into a soft over sweet mush and had little texture when I poured on the milk. Please please could you make them the original recipe. I can't enjoy these new ones at all. All my family agree with me that they aren't as nice. Denise Ramsay.

Really tasty, though they are expensive and the packaging is not recyclable.

New recipe is horrid, texture is all wrong, and goes mushy in the bowl ,like eating sweet sawdust. Old 'bark' recipe was lovely and have eaten it on and off since i was a teenager. Won't buy it again. Any suggestions for what to do with the rest of the package?

Really excited when I saw Frugrains on sale again. However I was bitterly disappointed when I opened the packet. Nothing like the old frugrains and rather a chewy stale taste.

My family used Mapletons Frugrains for many years and were devastated when they went off the market. I even took them out to Canada for my grandson as they were not available there.
I recently bought my first packet of Prewitts Frugrains to take to Canada when going to stay with my family there. These new Frugrains are an insult to call them the same name as the old ones. They are nothing like them and I will certainly not be buying them again. Firstly they are not crisp like the original ones, do not have the same amount of fruit in them and are tasteless.
From memory Mapletons cost under £3 and Prewitts cost £3.79 and are not worth the money.
I would be interested to read other peoples comments about the above.

Very Different - Mon 17th Sep 2012
Prewetts say these are new recipe - yes - very different as first ingredient is oats which were not in original recipe. Same great taste - WRONG - these taste nothing like Fru Grains - these are chewy balls of flavoured oats that disappear into gritty mush when milk is added. Bring back the original!!!

I was delighted to find fru grains the the shops again, this time in a new bag style package. I bought two bags, but I am bitterly dissapointed with the new recipe. It has the texture of sawdust with a bit if sweet chewy glue added and vitually no flavour at all, well it tastes like saw dust would I imagine. I am horrified they have done this to a wonderful healthy tasty traditional cereal. I will be retuning it with a complaints letter. It surely cannot fit the trades descriptions act to change a product so radically it is unrecognisable as the orgional? These are not Fru Grains as we know them and have nothing to reccomend them at all. Please, please, please bring back the orgional 'bark' recipe!

I have recently bought my first packet of the supposedly "new recipe, same fruity taste" Fru Grains having eaten them on and off for the last 40 years. What can I say, new packaging (fine), different taste, smell, colour and texture all of which are disgusting. I consider I've been conned into spending £3.99 on a different product masquerading under the old name. Shame on you Prewetts.

I have just tasted the 'new fru grains'. They are nothing like the original and are inedible. They are chewy and have a horrible taste of oats, I can taste no dates. They taste something between cardboard and sawdust. To describe the as having the same taste is taking a liberty. I have been eating fru grains for over 70 years so speak with some authority. Why don't you make them to the old recipe the the would be lovely and scrunchy If you did I would eat them again. If you have tasted the old fru grains and like them I doubt if you will like this product.

What a disappointment! - Fri 19th Oct 2012
I agree with the other reviewers, the new recipe is nothing like the old one. I used to love the big crisp chunks but this is just like any other coated oat cereal, only it sticks to your teeth. Why have they ruined what was an outstanding product.

Fru Grains - Wed 7th Nov 2012
I have known and loved the old Fru Grains since the late 1940s when they were given to me instead of sweets. My daughter and then granddaughter grew up enjoying them too. I eagerly purchased the new recipe Fru Grains when they came back on the market. What a travesty, what a con. They are nothing like the original. They are quite disgusting a combination of sawdust and glue. An expensive disappointment and not even fit to put out for the birds.

Prewetts Fru-Grains - Wed 9th Jan 2013
The packet tells us 'new recipe same fruity taste' - However, the taste is NOTHING like the Mapleton's original. Everything about this cereal is different and having finished the packet it really is very poor in comparison. I really wish Prewetts take note of everyone's comments and re formulate the recipe to at least get the taste like the delicious sadly missed Mapleton's original !
