Norma Elena is a pioneer farmer.
“I am an organic coffee farmer and have been a member of SOPEXXCA
for 8 years now. When I joined I was lucky to fi nd that there were a few
other women involved so we could help one another. When I started
there were fi ve and now there are 283 women farmers.
In the beginning, all the coffee was put together and we didn’t separate
it by gender. However later we began to separate the coffee harvested
by the women for Equal Exchange.
We got a good price plus an extra
women’s premium for this coffee
which was a real motivator for the
women.
We were always just housewives
before, even though we were also
working in the coffee fi elds. If
people asked us if we worked, we
would say no, no we don’t have
a job because we never received
a salary or any money for our
work. The point is we didn’t value
ourselves, we didn’t know how to.
We want to give value and visibility
to the important work that women
do and which has traditionally
been ignored. We no longer want to be forgotten or ignored.”
