Buckwheat is an ancient seed which was first cultivated in Asia thousands of years ago and is ground and used in a very similar way to the more traditional wheat berries. Buckwheats name is quite confusing as it is nothing at all like our traditional wheat in any way. It is not a grain and it does not contain the same proteins and gluten. Buckwheat is naturally gluten and wheat free with a nutty taste. It is very nutty and pleasant when eaten roasted as a seed and makes a great flour when ground down. It can be used in a similar way to wheat flour for baking and thickening.
Serving Suggestion
Buckwheat flour can be used in Raw Food recipes as a thickener.

Buckwheat - excellent For the slow carber! - Fri 8th Oct 2010
Fantastic product and sold at a very good price. I have used this product to make buckwheat pasta at a fraction of the cost of shop bought. Its also more convenient as buckwheat products are still quite hard to find in supermarkets. Works a treat with a slow carb diet and life style being low GI.

This flour makes the most amazing french style galette pancakes, they are great stuffed with spinach and mushrooms and a cheese sauce!

coeliac disease - Tue 8th Feb 2011
My 17 month old nephew was recently diagnosed with coeliac disease. As I have used buckwheat for a while now I was happy to be able to buy some of this delicious flour for him. He enjoys bread, yorkshire puddings and cakes as any other baby does, so when I showed my sister-in-law how to make healthy muffins and scrummy american pancakes with this she was over the moon. The quality is always Perfect with Doves Farm products, and this is no exception, they provide important ingredients for people with specific dietary needs. All I can say is, Delish!!!

Such good quality at a very low price. Makes super pasta, pancakes, muffins, etc. And with a genuine buckwheat taste, which is not always the case.

Pancakes! - Mon 6th Feb 2012
It says on the pack about making pancakes so that is what I used it for - the first one was a disaster as it boiled and evaporated into bits lol. (the bits cooked up nice and crispy though and tasted good) Turns out you need to make the batter a lot thicker than you would with ordinary wheat flour. So I added some more flour and egg into it and it was fine :) (It could also be that I was using non-dairy (rice) 'milk' as well) It will be interesting to find out what happens next time I make it as I am using soya milk now, not rice milk.
