Lotus is good for keeping a healthy respiratory tract. A little goes a long way: it expands a lot when soaked and has a strong flavour.
For a warming, gently energizing and strengthening soup, try it sautéed in sesame oil with an equal quantity of burdock root, carrot, onion, a touch of ginger and garlic. When it is all nicely cooked, stir in some boiling water and the strongest miso you can find, and serve with very well steamed greens and buckwheat noodles... Happy winter!

Bronchitis remedy - Tue 3rd May 2011
To cure bronchitis, soak 3 or 4 slices of lotus in three cups of cold water for 25 minutes to an hour. When they are rehydrated, chop them in tiny bits, pound in a suribachi and boil in soaking water until liquid has reduced to a cupfull. Drink warm once a day till symptoms ease. Great just before bedtime if coughing occurs mostly at night.
