Olive Oil as an Immunomodulator - Sun 8th Apr 2012
I have a neurological illness similar to multiple sclerosis (M.S.) called myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.). After a couple of evenings using 2tbsps of this oil, I felt a little different physically. My brain did not feel quite so foggy and I felt like my brain stem had a better blood flow. I also felt tingling in my hands and lower arms, indicating an immune reaction.
I did not take it for any specific health purpose, but was just using it on a salad. Trust me that as severely ill as I am (bedridden 11 years), it came as a pleasant surprise that it had *any* kind of physical effect at all and so I wondered if this indicated that olive oil has immunomodulating properties. After a Google search, these suspicions were confirmed.
Following the trial of the cancer drug, Rituximab, on M.E. patients in Norway, for its immunomodulating effects on the autoimmune component of M.E., I am eager to try natural immunomodulators for their gentler and broad spectrum effect on the body.
I also read that omega 3 and omega 6 oils are only used adequately by the body if their is sufficient supply of omega 9. Omega 9 is often made by the body in enough quantity, but when one is depleted through chronic, severe illness or age, then the body can't make enough, and obtaining a good quantity through the diet is very preferable. As olive oil is an extremely good source of omega 9, I can be rest assured that whilst it exhibits an immunomodulating action, it also supplies me with the omega 9 needed to utilise the essential omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Interestingly enough, Augusto Odone uses 4 parts extract of olive oil to 1 part extract of rapeseed oil in his 'Lorenzo's Oil' (see film of the same name) which he used for his son's adrenoleukodystrophy (A.L.D), so I think there's definitely more to olive oil than a healthy salad dressing!
Whilst it has by no means brought about a full recovery, or caused great leaps up the M.E. ability scale, just to 'feel a little better' is relieving on the body when one is very poorly 24/7/365. I also haven't had enough product to dedicate a strict dosage, and have so far only used it for a fortnight. I expect great things from using this product, so I'm stocking up on this, as well as rapeseed oil in order to make my own version of Lorenzo's Oil, and will be using a daily dose.
As M.E. patients and M.S. patients share the similarity of brain lesions, and the similarity with transverse myelitis (T.M.) patients of degeneration of the myelin sheath, then I think organic extra virgin olive oil and organic rapeseed oil may be found to be beneficial, since Lorenzo's Oil has "proved successful in normalizing the accumulation of the very long chain fatty acids in the brain that had been causing their son's (Lorenzo's) steady decline, thereby halting the progression of the disease."
