You may be familiar with Bran? Regular bran is the husk of the wheat grain which gets removed in flour milling. The bran accounts for much of the fibre in our grains. So if you are needing fibre it is to bran that you can turn. Likewise Oat bran is the outer husk of the oat grain. The difference here is that, unlike wheat bran, oat bran is soluble. In effect because it is soluble it can pass into our blood stream and absorb some of the cholesterol it finds there. Because of this oat bran is hailed as an excellent source of soluble fibre which has been seen to help decrease cholesterol levels.
Usage
Oatbran can be used in a similar way to any other bran: Just sprinkle it on your cereals, add to Muesli, add to your baking and use to make muffins, pancakes, biscuits or oat bran porridge. (see recipe for Oat bran porridge below). Oat bran can be used to replace some of the wheat bran, flour or oats in most recipes eg. Flapjack, soups, muffins and cakes, cookies and biscuits, bread and crumbles.

Oat bran drop scones - Savoury or sweet
Ingredients:
100g (4 oz) Oatbran
A pinch of salt
1 egg
300 ml (½ pint) milk
25g (1 oz) butter, melted
For sweet scones add 2 level tbspsns caster sugar or sweet freedom
Mix the oatbran and salt (plus sugar or sweetener for sweet scones) in a bowl and make a well in the centre. Break the egg into the well and add the milk gradually, as for making a batter. Stir in melted butter and allow to stand for 1 hour. Cook spoonfuls of the batter in a preheated lightly greased non-stick pan for about 3 minutes each side or until golden. Serve hot alongside a traditional English Breakfast or with warm syrup or jam. Oat Bran Porridge quick as a flash in the microwave
All in American cups, so measure by volume rather than weight using a standard tea cup (as in cup and saucer)
1/3 cup oat bran
3/4 cup water
1/2 apple chopped into small pieces
cinnamon (a couple shakes)
cloves (just a little bit)
nutmeg (small shake)
sweetener of some sort to taste: brown sugar, maple syrup, sweet freedom would all be fine.
Combine everything except sweetener in a bowl and microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring each minute. Sweeten and serve!
