Rosa Mosqueta

Rio Health

Rosa Mosqueta is an Andean wild Rose, Rosa aff. Rubignosa, that has been a beauty secret of Chilean women for centuries. The rosehips of this unique flower of the Rose family are exceptionally high in Essential Fatty Acids (nearly 90%). Essential Fatty acids are needed to produce hormone like substances called Prostaglandins that are used in the repair of skin tissue. In analysis, Rosa Mosqueta was found to contain high amounts of both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, originally thought to be the source of its regenerative effects, but research at the University of Seville Dermatology department also found itto contain Trans Retinoic acid, a compound related to vitamin A, involved in the process of generating new skin cells. The combination of these factors make the oil a potent tool in the repair and maintenance of healthy skin. The research at Seville University has led to a broad use of the oil in post operative scar clinics, and Rosa Mosqueta can even help to attenuate the marks left by old acne scars. For this purpose, it is best used over a period of about three months, during which time a gradual improvement should be seen.

Because Rosa Mosqueta delivers these essential fats directly to where they are needed, they can also substantially improve complexion for those who just wish to retard the signs of aging on the skin. Rosa can help to reduce the signs of sun damage, wrinkles and stretchmarks, and improve the texture of 'normal' skin. Good levels of these fats are also essential for skin hydration. Most people are chronically deficient in Essential Fats, and even those who supplement their diet may find that because the skin tends to be the last place these nutrients get to, they may benefit from topical application. To quote the world renowned expert on dietary fats, Dr Udo Erasmus;

"An optimum intake of healing oils (EFA's) contributes to soft, smooth, velvety skin without a hint of dryness."

Recent publicity has surrounded its use by top make up artist Christina Baker, who revealed in the Sunday Times that she used it on the stars of the 'Calendar Girls' film (including Helen Mirren, Julie Walters) and that Catherine Deneuve has been using it as a night oil for years. Tips for fabulous skin on reverse...

Rio RosaMosqueta is unsuitable for use on very oily skin.

Drink water at least 6-8 glasses (2 Litres) of mineral water a day. Air conditioning, a lack of water rich foods (i.e. salad, fruit & vegetables) and a lack of essential fats in the diet, plus the over consumption of diuretic drinks, i.e. Tea and coffee, all contribute to dehydration.

Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, that protect your skin cells from oxidative damage. Taking a Vitamin C supplement is a good idea because it is essential for the formation of collagen and tissue repair. Vitamin C is water soluble which is why it is often 'cooked' out of foods in the preparation stage. In fact it can be hard to get enough Vitamin C even in a 'good' diet, as traditional sources often have a lower content than you would expect. In one survey, a number of supermarket oranges were found to contain no vitamin C at all! In addition to this, lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and stress all create extra need. Zinc is essential for production of new skin cells, a lack of which can result in stretch marks on the skin. Also, ensure that your diet contains good levels of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's), found in oily fish, fruit, nuts, seeds and legumes. Sun Risks from skin cancer aside, sun exposure causes the formation of free radicals that can damage your skin cells. The effect of this is to age the skin more quickly, and although essential fats found in the Rio Rosa Mosqueta oil help to repair the damage, it makes sense to always wear good UV protection under the sun (or sun bed) to limit further damage. Always moisturise and leave the beach before you begin to burn.

Exfoliate Remove the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin by use of a body brush or exfoliator. Body brushing also stimulates the lymphatic system and will help your body detoxify.

Try and reduce your consumption of saturated fats, sugar, and stimulants. The more you 'fill up' on nutritionally worthless foods such as processed sugar, the less (logically) you are likely to eat the good food needed to provide you with essential nutrients. Additives can leach nutrients from your system, and cause the build up of toxins that damage skin cells. Brazilian Ginseng has been shown to reduce this. Additionally, both Caffeine and Tanin can block or reduce your ability to absorb nutrients, so never take your supplements with tea or coffee and avoid drinking tea or coffee at meal times!
