The Healing Herb

Garlic has been used for thousands of years both as a culinary flavouring and for medicinal purposes. Much of the original folklore surrounding garlic has been superceded by scientific research and it is now clear that garlic does indeed have much value both as a curative and preventative treatment for many complaints.

Garlic is a herb of the onion family. The garlic clove contains two sets of nutrients. Firstly, water soluble nutrients which include vitamins, enzymes, amino acids and natural sugars. (It is the sulphur containing amino acids which are known for their anti-oxidant properties.) Secondly, oil soluble nutrients including sulphur compounds originating from an amino acid named alliin is converted to a pungent compound called allicin which has natural antibiotic properties. Other than the pungent odour, garlic has no harmful or unpleasant side effects and can be taken indefinitely.

    How is it available?

We no longer have to boil the cloves in wine to benefit from the healing properties of garlic. Thanks to scientific developments, there is now a wide choice of alternative methods of taking garlic, essentially in powder tablet or capsule form (pearls). This is good news as the pungent smell of dried or fresh garlic can make it difficult to take in the required dosages.
