Why are they important? To keep your body hydrated you need to drink the equivalent of 2 litres or 8 glasses of water a day. The good news is that you can include the contribution made from herbal teas, coffee substitutes and pure juices. Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea and alcohol which actually dehydrate you, interfere with your blood sugar and rob your body of essential nutrients. Options AvailableFruit and vegetable juices and smoothies are nutrient rich and wonderfully energizing. Sip slowly and dilute with water to help reduce the rate of sugar release. There is also a huge range of fruit-based concentrates, punches and flavoured cordials which can be diluted with hot or cold water. While some have added sugar there are also several brands which don't. For an alternative to alcohol why not try Aqua libra, Ame or other soft drinks made with natural ingredients. Instead of coffee choose from a range of coffee substitutes made with roasted cereal grains like chicory, barley, rye or dandelion root. As an alternative to cow's milk try goat or sheep's milk, nut, soy, rice or oat milks. Make a delicious hot chocolate alternative using carob powder instead of cocoa.
